US Open: Osaka Survives Mertens Test, Rybakina Sets Up Last-16 Clash
Osaka survived a late scare against Elise Mertens, edging the Belgian 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in 2 hours and 38 minutes. The four-time Grand Slam champion had three match points slip away before finally sealing the contest when Mertens sent a forehand wide.
The victory was hard-earned for Osaka, who was also dealing with an Achilles problem that has persisted since the grass-court season. She required treatment from the trainer during the third-set changeover, while her own level of tennis was another source of frustration.
