42 वर्षीय शरत, जो रिकॉर्ड 10 बार राष्ट्रीय चैंपियन रह चुके हैं, वर्तमान में भारत के शीर्ष रैंक वाले पुरुष एकल खिलाड़ी हैं, जिन्हें नवीनतम डब्ल्यूटीटी रैंकिंग सूची में 42वां स्थान मिला है।
शरत ने चेन्नई में एक प्रेस कॉन्फ्रेंस में कहा, "चूंकि मैंने चेन्नई में अपना पहला अंतरराष्ट्रीय टूर्नामेंट खेला था और मैं अपना आखिरी अंतरराष्ट्रीय मैच भी चेन्नई में ही खेलूंगा। मेरे पास राष्ट्रमंडल खेलों के पदक, एशियाई खेलों के पदक हैं, लेकिन ओलंपिक पदक कुछ ऐसा है जो मेरे पास नहीं है। मुझे उम्मीद है कि मैं युवा प्रतिभाओं के माध्यम से उस सपने को जी पाऊंगा।"
